Fruits and Vegetables that Double as Dog Treats

Choosing the appropriate treats for your dog can be an overwhelming task. You worry that the store bought versions of dog treats contain too many fillers and are often viewed as unhealthy for your dog. But, DIY options can feel too involved for a small quick treat.

Fret no more! You can use fruits and vegetables as a yummy treat for your dog.

Your dog likely gets a balanced diet from his food; therefore, it is unnecessary to supplement with additional foods. But, if you’re looking for a healthy treat that is loaded with vitamins and minerals that will have a positive impact on your dog’s health, fruits and vegetables are your answer.

Fruits that Double as Great Dog Treats

These fruits are rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that can fight heart disease, reduce the risk of cancer, and are beneficial to your dog’s overall health.

When preparing these fruits as a treat, be sure to cut them into small bite-size portions to eliminate your dog’s risk of choking. Also, be sure to remove the pit and seeds before serving to your dog.

Apples - Full of vitamin A, B-6, C and thiamin.
Bananas - High in potassium, vitamins, and fiber. Use sparingly because of the high sugar content.
Blueberries - Plus, they’re already small enough to feed your dog!
Cantaloupe - Great, yummy option! Full of vitamins including beta carotene which helps reduce the risk of cancer.
Cranberries - Serve fresh or dried in small amounts. Too much can lead to an upset stomach.
Mango - Serve in small bits. Mangoes are full of vitamins and minerals including beta-carotene and alpha-carotene.
Oranges - Lots of vitamin C. Remove the peel before serving to your dog as it can be difficult for your dog to digest.
Peaches - Great source of fiber and vitamin A.
Strawberries - Full of fiber and vitamin C. Serving sparingly as strawberries are high in sugar.
Watermelon - Great for hydration during warmer months! Be sure to remove the rind and seeds first before serving to your dog.

Vegetables that Double as Dog Treats

Again, these vegetables are full of vitamins and minerals that are beneficial to your dog’s overall health. And, be sure to cut them into small bite-sized pieces to avoid choking.

Brussel Sprouts - Loaded with antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals.
Carrots - High in fiber and great for your dog’s teeth.
Celery - Fights heart disease and lowers the risk of cancer.
Cucumbers - Low in calories and high in nutrients.
